SIHH 2017 a first reflection, what makes any purchase “good” and “probably the best”.

“Good” and “probably the best” by 2017 Looking back at decades of buying my stuff, and cleaning house in 2011…what is the best? It is the watch that I find most fascinating to photograph and use as a tool to share with the curious what makes it “good” and “probably the best”. Yes..Basel will be part 2. But in 2004, Greubel Forsey launched the DT30. Better known as the Double Tourbillon 30. Over the years, I could not with clear conscience say it, until I could afford to buy it. Greubel Forsey know it took me 12 years to save and pay for it. Looking at the few pictures below, unretouched, under normal office light….the 2004 DT30 platinum IS the most beautiful gender free watch ever made since...

Patek Philippe Calatrava 3919

Patek has 37 Calatrava models The Calatrava 3919, small but strangely wearable. Coming from me..wearing AP offshore and MB&F 1, this may sound strange. I enjoy wearing my 1986 Calatrava 3919 in white gold serves me well and marks the year of my company’s birth. 1986. Like my business, or profession, medicine…the 36mm 3919 is alive, well, enjoyed almost daily and aged zero. This picture shows you what it is today…nearly 30 years without a service. Look for a Patek Calatrava 3919 They are, these Calatrava 3919 getting more rare since 2014. I have been hunting and buying another 3. I have daughters. These are reliable, and easy for them to resell. Small and...

Tourbillons, cost in efficency, huge increases in long term resales IMHO

Tourbillons, cost in efficency, huge increases in long term resales IMHO

Tourbillons Tourbillons will always cost as much as 3 x to 10 x the price of the closest related watch in the brand. Efficiency  will take a small 5% hit. It’s because of the extra parts and mass. Long Term Resales Over any one’s guess, mine is that from 2002, to 2016…you will find GOOD buys in the used market. I bought 12 tourbillons over the last 8 years. Only 3 were brand new. I am sure of my moves. I never ever buy with INVESTMENTS as a motive. That is the secret of using your tastes, emotions and IQ to make the RIGHT choices. Buying NEW watches NOW has a place: My guess is to go conservative if you are new, less than 1 year into this hobby. I don’t run any business that involves watches, trading or selling. A nice Rolex in their...

Patek Philippe 5100 Manta rose gold sees light after 16 years

5100 reference, the GREATEST , most value for money watch made after the age of the internet. Patek’s only serious rival to Greubel Forsey. All the molds and casts were destroyed and audited. Not one useless complication. Simplicity at its best, totally Philippe DuFour and more. Beauty with zero superfluous jazz. 750 made in RG, and 1500 in yellow…both are made to own and to mean real investments. Twin barrels. 21,600 vpm….the finest uncomplicated watch ever made, and for the first time, I agree that the words Patek mean investment, for THIS watch. Lesson: Use the watches we buy, and keep track.

Greubel Forsey Invention Piece 1

Greubel Forsey Invention Piece 1 Created between 2002 to 2005, this is the platinum piece ,of 11 maximum made. The Greubel Forsey Invention Piece 1, also known as the IP 1, was first shown, or revealed in 2006 Basel to three journalists, and possibly the first collector and customs to own it later after 2010. It was the herald of the GOLDEN (or rather Platinum) AGE of the 7 figure watches that actually do deserve those halo prices. In fact, when the IP 1 was revealed, it was called the Harry Winston Opus 6. I, was then informally linked to the industry as an “early adopter” and informal advisor/trouble shooter. I saw the fully completed CAD generated engineering diagrams with Hamdi Chiatti at the Raffles Hotel, with TheHourGlass as early as 2005. Max...

Buying your ONE landmark watch that projects “YOU” and “Your Philosophy”.

Your wristwatch projects you and your philosophy of living. It does NOT HAVE TO BE proportionate to the relevance, size or budget you control, or leverage. Wearing your philosophy is OPEN for those who see it. The BEST ? In every way? This era?
